A glimpse into the Summerset dialect of Southwest England

Bob Kingsley blogs under the name Somerset Bob and has published several podcasts called Somerset Life. Some of them were written by my friend and mentor Philip Banks. The others were written by Bob. All of them are virtually opaque to this set of ears, but then I’ve never before encountered this Somerset dialect of English. Whatever the case, they are an auditory delight.

Update: Be sure to read Bob Kingsley’s comment, below, for a bit of important clarification about this accent he performs!

  1. Hi Bob,

Thanks for the mention! I’m pleased you enjoyed listening to some of the “Somerset Life” episodes – I particularly like the ones penned by Philip – but I wouldn’t want you or your readers to think that the ‘dialect’ I adopted for Sam & Ebeneezer is representative of how the locals around these here parts actually speak!

Though it probably mimicks a few elements of West Country speech patterns, it’s pretty much a made-up accent, intended to add a touch of humour rather than to accurately reflect voices encountered in real life. Accents have never really been my strong point!

Thanks for the add to your list of Voiceover blogs. It’s been reciprocated :)

Best wishes to you from Zummerzet!

  2. Bob,

Wonderful to hear from you and thank you for adding that significant bit of clarification to the story.

And thank you for the links. I’m trying to add every voiceover talent’s blog to my blogroll, regardless of whether there’s any reciprocity.

    Be well,
    Bob
