When I was about 19 thinking I had a grip on the world, a friends dad was telling me about his new job as an independent insurance broker. He had been through many positions and finally at the age of 51 he was happy to find something that worked for him. I asked him what it was like to start all over again. He paused and said, “You know Andrew?, You never start over. Everything you do teaches you something and you take a little of everything you do to the next job, or next part of your life or into your relationships. We’re always learning and always growing. You can never really start over.”
Bob has been gone now for some years and while he lived a fairly simple life his words have seriously helped me. There have been so many times I ask myself “what am I doing this for?”. Even now in my Voice Over Career when i think i am starting over, I look back on so many careers I have taken on with success and pull from those learning experiences what I can to make my next step in life more successful. Fortunately I have been able to share his thoughts with many along the way as well because if by chance it can help others the way helped me, his words will ring even more true.
