With thanks to my friend and mentor Philip Banks for posting the link to this video on the VO-BB, here’s a look inside a microphone factory.
Fascinating.

That was really cool. Thanks to you and Phillip for another lesson in my voice over education.

I’m hoping that by seeing this people are surprised at just how much of this type of work is still done by hand. Mics are as much an art as a science… craftsmanship still counts for a lot.
I know it surprises a lot of folks to know that even with the change in ownership, the U87s are still primarily assembled by hand.

Greg,
I will admit I was surprised by how much is done by hand. A real testament to the craftsmanship that goes in to microphones.

Yes it is. Some of the boutique manufacturers I’ve had the pleasure of being invited to really surprise you as to the level of work which they do by hand (in some cases, even the transformers are wound on site, in others they build, solder, and test their own circuit boards on site).
Makes you want to buy a few, eh?

Greg,
Yes, but my wallet dictates otherwise, for now.

That was so cool! Now when my husband asks (as he did the other day) “What makes a microphone worth thousands of dollars?” I will have an answer. For now though, I’m stickin’ with my Podcaster. It has served me well.
Thanks again for posting that–always something to learn at the boblog.
