Something old, something new
No, this isn’t a blog post about a wedding. Yesterday was a very interesting day for me, kind of a 90s day. It started with a session at a recording facility in Pittsburgh. While I do most of my work in my own studio, I do get called to go for sessions at someone else’s studio now and then. What was especially interesting was that I also had an audition to do at another studio. Now, my friends who do on-camera work (like Pam and Amy) do auditions in a casting office or a studio all the time; but I haven’t been to a studio or casting office for an audition since sometime in maybe 2001?
The really interesting part happened as I was walking up to the studio. I was about 20 minutes early because the other session hadn’t taken very long. This is the scene I encountered when I got to about a half a block from the studio:
Yes, if you look closely at the back of that truck, it does say “Bomb Squad” on there. The nice police officer I met when I got to the police tape explained that I was probably going to be late for my appointment. I called my agent to let them know what was going on. They were as surprised as I was.
Thankfully it turned out to be a kid’s backpack left behind on a city bus and not a bomb. Everything was cleared with a few minutes to spare so I did do my audition. I’m not sure that I did all that great. It was kind of out of my range, but I wanted to do it because it has been so long since I did an audition like that. Not to mention, it was a lot of fun working on the audition with another talent in the room with me.
Then it was back home to a more “normal” rest of the day with a phone patch (some PBS promos) and an ISDN session (a medical narration), and some editing on an audiobook I’m recording. Oh, and an eLearning narration recording and …
What can I say? I love my job.

Websites for Voice Actors
Over the last 14 years I’ve learned a ton from Dan O’Day that has been helpful to me and my voiceover business. What I appreciate most about Dan is that he teaches practical and highly usable information, not a bunch of stuff that’s so theoretical or esoteric to be of any real use.

Internet Survey results coming
At VoiceOverXtra John Florian talks about the panel discussion he’s part of at VOICE 2010 that will focus on voice actors and the Internet. During that panel discussion, John will unveil the results of a survey on the subject of how voice actors use the Internet. The survey drew over a thousand responses.
