Report on the Voice Over Industry 2009

General

David Ciccarelli, CEO of Voices.com, emails with a note about a new post on the Vox Daily blog that includes a free download PDF of this Report. I’ve read through the report and can tell you I think it’s well worth a few minutes of your time.

Bob, I read through the document as well, and while I think it’s worth a read, I also think that it’s worth mentioning that a lot of the stats being tossed out there aren’t being backed up with metrics or historical BoEs. When they had them, they were cited, though not all that well (sorry, it’s a document that should probably be in APA, and I’m being a little curmudgeon on that… it’s not a deal breaker for me, but worth mentioning). Long story short, take some of the numbers tossed out there with a grain of salt.
A good example is the distribution of work that is used in the map on slide. It doesn’t show where the work is, just how it’s spread out. Because of that, it’s not showing how a lot of work from NYC is now migrating to casting agencies and studios in secondary cities within a 200 mile radius of the town in order to attract quality talent, but still save some $ in the current economic climate. On the flip side, much of the VO work in LA is still staying there, but LV has been getting a bit more (a little from LA, but more from Chicago… which is a little unusual; I’m making that statement based on comments from agents in the area… whereas I’m experiencing the NYC influx firsthand).
Overall, I think that with the shape of all things VO, “interactives” are where things are going. Podcasts, audiobooks, videogames, user interfaces all fit that description.
It’s an interesting read, but once you understand those three items, I think you get a lot more out of it. OTOH, maybe I’m just being nitpicky, but you know me… details and sources are vital to me.
    Cheers!
    Greg

    Greg,
I very much appreciate your thoughtful and insightful comments. You, nitpicky? Ha!
    Be well,
    Bob
