The voices of Bambi

General

With thanks to my friend and mentor Philip Banks for posting the link to this video on the VO-BB, here is a wonderful interview feature on the adults, when they were children, provided many of the voices for the Disney classic “Bambi.”

I had the great pleasure of studying with, learning from and beginning a children’s theatre company with one of the great Disney voices, Ginny Tyler. Until recently, Ginny lived only three houses away from me.
Ginny was personally selected by Walt Disney to be the first Disneyland Storyteller. She was also the Mouseketeer who gave reports from Disneyland during the television program’s airing. Attendance at the new park needed to be stimulated, and Ginny was the one to do it.
She did an amazing exercise, where she would use a little cassette tape recorder and then speak lines from animated films she did. She would have the child imitate her immediately, turning on the hand-held mike as they began to speak. She manually paused the recording then repeated the imitation. The final product was a recording of the child who sounded absolutely amazing and it gave the child a sense of how they could access their own personality and creativity to create a voice.
At nearly 90 years of age, she remains an exceptionally talented woman full of love and tremendous range. She moved away a few months ago to be near her son and I miss her dearly.
These YouTube videos brought back fond memories of personally knowing and working with Ginny.

“Watcha gonna call em?” is most definitely my favorite line of animation voiceover ever. Thanks for reminding me Bob!
