Social Media ROI

General

Here’s a thought-provoking video that speaks to all of us running our own business, that would include 100% of voice actors and a very high percentage of our clients:

My thanks to Peggy Campbell for the email linking to this video.

Hi, Bob. Its your friendly contrarian curmudgeon here. I’d like to comment on the way this message is delivered, and not on the point ostensibly being made. A bunch of really quick numbers and quotes do not equal an argument. If this method of “advertising” proves successful, we’re looking at the end of logic.
Yes, I’m overstating. But when you boil down the “pitch” presented here, it surely comes to something like, “Some companies have had very good success with social media.” OK, granted. An anecdote is a statistic with a sample-size of one. What about other companies that didn’t have such wild success?
This presentation seems deliberately designed to get around our skeptical mental processing. It poses as reason (NUMBERS! STATISTICS! BELIEVE!) but it acknowledges no possible objection, it allows no counter-argument. The music and the pacing seem to be an attempt to force us to engage the message, but the message is not really a structured message; just a series of impressions.
Social media may be the best things since sliced bread, but this little bit of propaganda – there is nothing else to call it – is frightening. Yes, I know that there are many other messages like it, and I think it’s time someone pointed out that this is not advertising nor persuasion as we have known it.

    Dan,
I so appreciate your contrarian point of view. It’s vitally important to understand not only the message being sent, but the intent of the message and the medium.
    Be well,
    Bob
