About time for a snap decision

Career Advice, General

Have you ever made a decision about something at the last minute? I certainly have, more than a few times, too. Sometimes things don’t work out all that great, but sometimes those snap decisions turn out to be some of the best you ever make.

This weekend in Charlotte, Faff Camp is taking place. If you’re serious about your voiceover business and you can get yourself to Charlotte, now is the perfect time to make one of those snap decisions.

I truly believe, if you do, and if you put into practice what you learn this weekend, you will make a tremendous leap forward in your voiceover business in the next year. Do it. Come to Faff Camp.

Marice and winning the Super Bowl

Career Advice, General

There was a football game played last weekend in New Orleans. If you live in North America, you might have noticed. One of the ladies who has had a profound influence on my work is Marice Tobias. For someone who isn’t a sport fan, she makes a mighty good point in her recent blog post, What I Learned from the Super Bowl – part 1.

When Doug speaks …

Career Advice, General, People

People listen. If you’re old enough to remember the old E. F. Hutton commercials, you’re recognize my rip-off and re-use of their copy. And the point of why I’m harking back to and old television commercial campaign for a long-gone stock brockerage? Because the other day I thought about writing a post here based on the very cogent words of Seth Godin. I’m glad I didn’t though, because Doug Turkel has written what I would have, only much better.

If you’re a professionaly at voiceover: Read. Think. Act.

You’ll be better for it.

How to find your passion

Career Advice, General

I hear from folks from time to time who read this blog and think “I’d like to do that voiceover thing, too.” Some of them have been thinking about that for a long time. Some have been thinking it for only a short while.

Whatever the case, one thing is for sure. If you’re going to make a living doing voiceovers you have to be passionate about doing so. Like any other business venture, and especially a business venture involving some kind of performance, the lows are too low and too frequent to endure if you aren’t passionate about that venture.

With that set-up, I offer this bit of advice about how to find your passion. Read Roy H. Williams’ Monday Morning Memo from May 14, 2012.

Done? Good. There’s nothing more I need to say. You all ready know everything you need to know.

Selling your voiceover services

Career Advice, General

Seth Godin, as you probably know, is a first class writer about business and marketing. His insights are worth your attention every day, but I especially want to point out his blog post from a few days ago called “A hierarchy of business to business needs.” Think about what you’re doing when you’re selling your voiceover services. Are you selling to consumers? Almost never, right? You’re nearly always selling to a business and much of the time, not to the owner of that business.

In light of Seth’s list, linked above, how do you need to adapt your marketing messages?

Voices of Experience

Career Advice, General, Getting started in Voiceover, People

My friend Doug Turkel has just released an eBook called Voices of Experience. Doug provided me with an advance copy and I have to tell you, I think this is a seriously first class book with wonderful insights from a number of very experienced voice actors. I think you will enjoy this eBook, Voices of Experience, a great deal. I sure am.

(Update: This was supposed to post a few days ago, but my blog software decided to hold it until now. Computers are wonderful, when they work. Otherwise, not so much.)

My studies with Marice Tobias started in October of 2007. Her insights and counsel are legendary for a reason. Her ability to help you focus on the things you’re doing to trip yourself up is simply amazing. How, having said that as an introduction, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read Marice’s blog posts about celebrities and voiceover. It’s well worth a few minutes of your time.
