Career Advice, General, People

My friend DB Cooper is one of the very best video game voice actors. (She’s also very good at all kinds of voice actory things, but this blog post isn’t about those things.) She’s going to be teaching a class on doing exertion sounds for video games and ADR on coming up soon. Details will be announced as soon as they become available.

(edited to change details that are not yet fully finalized.)

Voiceover and Backstory

General

In all the years I’ve attended the International Radio Creative and Production Summit (this year will be my 15th in a row), one of my favorite parts has been the times when Christine Coyle, long time Creative Director for Dick Orkin at the Famous Radio Ranch, directed us in voiceover performances.

Chris is such a brilliant director and really knows how to draw superb performances from voiceover talent. She is arguably the world’s most successful director of radio commercials.

Fish where the fish are

General

I’m not a fisherman. I confess this even though I know it may offend you. It’s not that I want to offend, I’m just trying to clarify that even though I’m using a fishing analogy in the title of today’s post, this analogy doesn’t come from some deep pool of fishing experience. (pun intended there) It’s just a handy analogy.

I do have a younger brother who loves to fish and I’ve even gone fishing with him a few times; but that scant bit of experience hardly qualifies me as a fisherman. Oh, and to run just a little further down this bunny trail, since I’m the oldest of my siblings, all of my brothers are younger brothers.

OK. Back to the point now.

From both my scant experience and from observation I know that if you want to be successful at fishing, you have to fish where the fish are. Having grown up in Minnesota where you can throw a stone in any general direction and hit a lake, it doesn’t work to just pull up to a random lake, pull out your fishing gear and drop in a line. Some lakes don’t have any fish in them. So, you can fish there as long as you like, you won’t catch any fish.

While I do refer voiceover work (sometimes) to over voiceover people, and thankfully receive referrals for voiceover work from other voiceover people from time to time; the majority of my work doesn’t come via that route. The majority of yours won’t either.

As usual, Seth Godin makes this point much more eloquently than I do, in this case in a post at the blog at his new publishing venture called The Domino Project. If you haven’t yet checked out The Domino Project, you really should.

And good fishing!

Are you on the right path?

Career Advice, General, Getting started in Voiceover

Seth Godin, a very bright man, has started a new venture called The Domino Project. The newest release is called Anything You Want by Derek Sivers, the brains behind CD Baby. Derek is creating animated videos to illustrate some of the key points of his new book. This one is called If It’s Not a Hit, Switch.

If it’s not a hit, switch from Derek Sivers on Vimeo.

I don’t know if Derek realizes he was aiming this one at voiceover people or not, but wow does that hit the mark.

Better than working for a living

Blogging, General

For some time now, when people have asked me how I like working in voiceover full time my reply has been “It’s a lot better than working for a living.” Now, in truth there is “work” involved in voiceover. Meeting deadlines. Exceeding expectations. Delivering the performance people are looking for. These things don’t happen by accident. It does take concentration, effort, persistence and experience to deliver the goods in the studio. And to deliver the audio in the requested format. And so forth and so on.

But, having grown up on a farm in central Minnesota, I can tell you that voiceover is nothing like what I knew as “working for a living” as I was growing. Stacking bales of hay, shoveling grain, and especially mucking out the barn after the milk cows where finished. That was real work.

Today, I’ve spent a few hours mucking out the blogroll here at the Voiceover Boblog. It was beginning to stink to high heaven frankly. Broken links. A couple of links leading to hacked sites filled with malware. Good grief. I’ve neglected the blogroll for far too long. But as of today, I’ve personally tested every link. Later today there might be new problems but for now, everything in the blogroll should lead where it’s supposed to lead.

Now, it’s time to get back to the audiobook I’m just about to finish, and get started on the pick-ups for the other audiobook that’s due in a couple of weeks.
